 Focus on the Fabulous

Haskin Elementary students, under the direction of our awesome music teacher, Mr. Gabe Swanson, put on an amazing Spring Concert on Thursday evening.  The kids entertained the audience with fun tunes that kept feet tapping.  Students sang, showed their groovy moves with fun choreography, played recorders, and kept the beat on percussion instruments.  There was even a little bit of Ozzy’s Crazy Train!  Great job to Haskin Elementary.  We definitely know how to put on a good show!

Our district has been fortunate to get an infant staff daycare room established this school year.  This is one of the district’s recruiting and retention efforts and provides much-needed support for our staff and young families.  The toddler room has been in place for the last 3 years, and this year, we were able to get the infant room up and running. It’s no secret that childcare costs are on the rise in Colorado.  In fact, the state is among the top five most expensive states when it comes to child care according to the 2023 Kids Count Data Book.  There are also reports that parents across the nation paid at least 13% more for child care than the previous year.  The average cost for infant care is about $2,000 a month, and toddler care is $1800 a month.  Our district is able to provide childcare for our staff at a significantly reduced rate, only $200 a month and 90% less than the average rate!  This is just one of the many amazing perks that staff receive when they are a member of the Viking Family!

Rewind

Spring sports are in full swing. Our middle school track and field team competed at the Alamosa meet on Thursday, setting a number of PRs and receiving awards. Our CHS team competed at Bayfield, and they had a successful meet as well! However, high winds canceled the baseball game and track meet over the weekend.

Our baseball team lost their game to Sanford on Tuesday.  They are looking for their first win this week against Las Animas!

Work on the track and field continues and you can see impressive progress each week!  We are looking forward to hosting our own track meets next year!

Fast Forward

We are gearing up to start state assessments this week.  It’s important that our kids perform well and demonstrate all the learning that has taken place in our classrooms this school year.  Staff has been dedicated to providing high-quality instruction to students on a daily basis.  Testing will start on Tuesday.
