Updated: Aug 25, 2020

We’re off to a great start! Our first day of school for the 2020-2021 school year was on August 17th. Our Viking team has done a great job of getting everything together so that we can hit the ground running. Currently, we have approximately 65% of our students attending face-to-face and 35% of our students attending on-line. Our staff has done an amazing job getting things in place so that we can move forward with quality instruction in a safe and Students were greeted enthusiastically by their teachers!! student centered environment. Way to go Vikings!!

Focus on the Fabulous

A huge thank you to the wonderful team at the Methodist church for preparing an amazing lunch for our staff on our welcome back day! Our staff was treated to a fabulous salad grab-and-go lunch, complete with a selection of delicious salads, side dishes, and desserts. We truly appreciate the support of our community and especially the gracious efforts of the amazing Saguache United Methodist team and Rev. Debra Upton. What a great way to start the year! We appreciate the support and love of the Center community as demonstrated through the beautiful luncheon prepared by the Methodist church. Thank you!

Great Things Going On

Our food services team, under the leadership of Dianna Valenzuela, is going the extra mile to provide meals to all students enrolled in Center schools, whether attending face-to-face or virtually. Grab and go lunches are available for pick up from noon to 1:00 pm in front of the commons area. Students who are attending on-site have meals delivered to the classrooms, they eat breakfast in the classrooms and for lunch they are able to go to designated areas outside and enjoy the fresh air.

Extra school programming is being provided through the Center Vikings Youth Club for students who are on offsite rotation days. The CVYC is providing additional academic and recreational options for our students and we’ve had positive feedback about the activities. We are fortunate to be able to offer these multi layers of supports for our students thanks to our Grant Coordinator Katrina Ruggles and her amazing team.

The future is so bright, we have to wear shades! Kids received sunglasses on their first day back!

Friday we had our first Professional Development day. Staff had the opportunity to listen to motivational speaker Joe Martin, who reminded us of the impact that teachers make in kids’ lives and Tim McGowan led a discussion on strategies for enhancing Positive School Climate.

Our staff has benefitted from a number of professional development opportunities and receives ongoing training thanks to the hard work of Dr. Stephanie Hensley, our Director of Instruction. We are able to provide a comprehensive hybrid approach to instruction during this time because of the resources and supports that have been put into place, including EL education, Eureka math, Linda Mood Bell, and Springboard math, to name a few.

Our Transportation department is getting students who live outside the city limits to school safely, while practicing the social distancing protocols, in our brand new buses!

Our screening team has been doing an amazing job before school, checking temperatures and conducting the brief health survey, to ensure that we our doing our best to keep our students and staff healthy. These additional layers of protection are in place to ensure the safety and well-being of our students and staff. This year we are grateful to have two full time nurses on staff. Thanks to our nursing team, Wendy Murillo and Randi Asbell, that have kept us apprised of the health and medical needs of our students and the ongoing guidance of operating a district during a pandemic. These ladies have done a great job of interpreting the ongoing medical updates and guidance to ensure we are following the recommended protocols.

Looking forward to a great 2020-2021 school year! Let's go Vikings! Burn the Ships!!!
