Center of Focus

Focus on the Fabulous

We had a great first week back at school with students and a great start to the New Year! We are kicking off a Merit Ownership Competition between grades to recognize positive behaviors and honor students and classes who are working hard, making good decisions, and representing what it means to be a Center Viking! Our CASB Crew of student leaders is coordinating the competition and did an excellent job presenting to both the staff and students throughout the week to get the competition kicked off. Our CASB crew consists of Ahyari Fimbres, Devannie Nunez, Isis Soto, Lelany Soto, and Elijah Swanson. These CHS students are taking on student ownership roles in the district to support district efforts and are doing an excellent job exemplifying the characteristics of our graduate profile, especially our areas of focus this year, which are effective communicators and problem solvers. These students identified some areas that were concerns in the district, problem solved together, and now we are working together as a Center community to put those plans into action. The CASB Crew will be announcing the standings for each grade and building at the beginning of the week! We are also reinforcing our cell phone policy and the expectation is that students turn all cell phones into the phone pockets at the beginning of every class. Students did a great job following through with that expectation. We are looking for students living up to expectations and awarding Viking Bucks along the way! Go Vikings!

School Board Recognition is this month and this is the time that we recognize our Board for their contributions to public education. We are fortunate to have the five board members who represent and work hard for what’s best for our students and district. Kim Duran, Board President, Misty Palacious, Vice President, Richie Barela, Secretary/Treasurer, Lloyd Garcia, and Lyn Bogle, Board Directors are the five individuals that make up the Center School Board. As citizens who serve students and represent our community, they face complex and demanding challenges. The monthly school board meetings are just a small fraction of the time and energy that they dedicate to our district. This past week, the BOE met with the Urban Renewal Authority to negotiate the district’s support of the URA. We also had a special Board meeting on Monday in which the BOE approved the bid from Hellas to renovate and replace the track and football field at the Community Park. Our Board has worked hard to ensure we have the highest quality staff in place and they want to ensure that our staff is the best paid in the Valley and that they are supported and respected in our district. These are just a few examples of the work that our Board is doing behind the scenes to make CCSD the best district around.

Rewind

Our ELD team worked hard the first week back on ACCESS testing. Thanks to Anna Bishop, Alex Magness, and Amanda Alanis for coordinating the testing for our Multi-Language Learners and getting our students tested. We use the results of these tests, along with other resources, to make decisions about students’ English academic language and to facilitate language development.

The first-ever Steve Martinez Memorial game was held on Friday night in Del Norte. Even though the games didn’t go the way we’d hoped, it was great to see all the support from both communities for our Steve-O. It’s pretty awesome to see the way he continues to bring people together.

Our Viking wrestlers had a great weekend at the Custer County Bobcat Invitational and were the tournament champs! Congratulations to Jordan Duran, Fran Villa, Martin Palma, and Jesus Valadez who all took 1st place. Matthew Archuleta, Andre Meraz, Lorenzo Trujillo, and Devin Thompson all took 2nd place. Other grapplers who landed on the awards podium included Caden Ruggles- 3rd place, Nicolas Palma- 4th place, and Michael Archuleta- 5th place. The wrestling team was also recognized in the Mile High Prep Report as one of the top five 2A teams in the state! What an impressive performance by our Viking wrestlers. Way to go boys!
