Focus on the Fabulous
Once again Center families were entertained with a fabulous winter concert. Monday night the Center band delighted the audience with fun Christmas melodies. The fifth-grade band started the show and played several familiar tunes, including Hot Cross Buns and Good King Wenceslas.
The middle and high school bands rounded out the fun performances. Sixth graders treated us to Tchaikovsky’s Theme from The Nutcracker, always a Christmas favorite. It was a packed house with standing room only. The SMS band wished us a Merry Christmas and the CHS band took us on a sleigh ride! The night ended Mr. Noriega’s rendition of Silent Night. The kids sounded great, Mr. Noriega conducted with enthusiasm, and Javier Ramos-Baca did an amazing job, once again, as the Master of Ceremonies. We are officially ready to kick off the holidays!
Thanks to Wendy Murillo for scheduling another successful eye exam opportunity for our students. Adventure Vision was able to see 49 students and get 41 of those kids fitted for glasses. To quote Wendy, “Close to forty of our students are getting the gift of sight for Christmas!” Thanks, Wendy for making this happen for our students.
Mrs. Pepper’s 4th-grade class had fun with a book tasting last week. Students gathered in their small groups at Starbooks and enjoyed “coffee”, aka apple juice, as they discussed book choices. What a fun way to get kids excited about literacy! Way to be creative about reading Mrs. Pepper! We love it!
The CHS Lady Vikings had a successful Viking Invitational tournament and handily won the championship against Crowley County. The boys’ varsity team played hard and wound up in 4th place when it was all said and done. Congratulations to both our basketball teams on a successful tournament.
The wrestlers were strong competitors at the Warrior Classic in Grand Junction and we once again had Vikings on the winners’ podium. Overall, the team finished in 6th place out of 41 teams. Great showing Vikings!
Rewind
The District Accountability Committee met on Tuesday night to decide on this year’s Measures of Student Learning. Dr. Ruggles presented mid-year data that gave the team a starting point for establishing goals that will be tied to teacher evaluations. This year’s collective MSLs will be NWEA data, reading, and math, and each building will strive to see students achieve at least a 5% increase in overall growth.
The BOE meeting was on Tuesday evening. The financial audit was presented and approved by the Board. A huge shout out to Betty and JJ for working hard to get all our financials in place so that we could have a successful audit. We have a small, but mighty team in the administration office and they work hard to keep things running smoothly. This was also the organizational meeting in which officers were nominated. Kim Duran was elected to be the Board President, Misty Palacios will remain in the Vice Presidential role, and Richie Barela will be the Secretary/Treasurer. Lloyd Garcia and Lyn Bogle will be the Board Directors. Thanks to our Board for their dedication to our district. We are fortunate to have such a solid team that puts the needs of our students first. They will be at our Thursday Christmas breakfast to show their appreciation to our amazing staff.
