Focus on the Fabulous
Last week was a challenging week for our district and Viking Family as we said goodbye to our beloved family member, Steve Martinez. Even in difficult times like these, we see the strength and goodness of our students, staff, and community. We celebrated Steve’s life on Saturday in Del Norte.
The service focused on the impact Steve had on each of us and the light that he was by the way he lived his life. Steve cared deeply for our students and worked hard to help them make the right decisions. Our Center video was played in the service and it illustrated the positive impact that he made on each of us. Thanks to Mrs. Maldonado’s video tech team and their hard work putting the video together. It was special to have it played so that everyone could see how much his Center family loved him. We will miss our Steve-O. He was True Blue. We can consider ourselves lucky to have known him. We can honor him by following his example and continuing his work.
Our counseling team did a great job of getting support in place throughout the week for anybody who might need it. Thanks to Stephany, Jerica, Mary, Adele, and Katrina for coordinating efforts and being available. Thanks to Chris for making the library a space for students and staff to gather.
Another example of the way our family pulls together was the Awareness fundraiser dinner that was organized by Jill Downie and her advisory class. The dinner was held on Friday afternoon to support Steve’s family. Our volleyball team’s last game of the year coincided with the dinner. There was a nice tribute to Steve at the start of the varsity game. Our senior players were recognized and parents were appreciated. The Lady Vikings ended the season with a win, defeating South Park in three.
The Viking football team traveled to Trinidad and had a spectacular night, ending their season with a shutout! This was a well-deserved win and a great way to finish! Way to go Vikings!
We got some early Halloween scares at the ARC Haunted House. The ghouls and goblins were haunting the halls of the ARC and those who were brave enough to enter got spooked!
I also want to highlight some of our amazing students who are making a difference in the community! The town of Center recognized Diego Gregorio Francisco, Fernando Morales-Cervantes, and Rony Lorenzo Baltazar for their hard work helping to clean up the town. Our Center students saw a need and took action! The town reported that they removed over 50 pounds of trash from the ditch last weekend. We are proud of our boys and their hard work making a difference! Way to go Vikings!
Wednesday and Thursday we held our first round of Parent Teacher Conferences. We had a great turnout and teachers had the opportunity to visit with parents about their students’ progress. Families also had the chance to swing by the library and visit the book fair.
There were fun dress-up days and activities throughout the week as students celebrated Red Ribbon Week.
As part of the district’s comprehensive safety and security work, Center staff will take part in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training during the professional development day on Friday. CPI training programs provide strategies and techniques for all levels of educational professionals that focus on the care, welfare, safety, and security of all students and staff. These are evidence-based, trauma-informed behavior management and crisis prevention approaches that will help prevent challenging behaviors, strengthen student outcomes, and prepare staff to intervene or de-escalate risk behaviors.
